# Design Language for simai.day

## Aesthetics and Tone
Victorian-ornate aesthetic crossed with the coastal-blend serenity of the Cornish library at Falmouth - imagine William Morris's wallpaper patterns rendered in sun-bleached cream and seafoam, the Pre-Raphaelite illuminations of Edward Burne-Jones translated into coastal-light palette, the page borders of Owen Jones's "Grammar of Ornament" reinterpreted for a seaside study. The tone is authoritative: the unhurried confidence of a Cambridge don who has retired to a coastal villa and now writes definitive monographs by the sea. Despite the heavy Victorian ornament, the design uses frutiger-clean typography (a contemporary humanist face) and minimal-navigation layout to keep the page architecturally modern - the ornament is decoration, not structure. Collage imagery layers Victorian engravings with contemporary photographic textures. Book-scholarly motifs (marginal manicules, drop caps, ornamental dingbats, gilt monograms) anchor the design vocabulary.

## Layout Motifs and Structure
Minimal-navigation layout: the entire site uses a single nav element - a thin centered horizontal rule at the top with 5-6 Roman-numeral chapter links (I, II, III, IV, V, VI) in 12px display caps. No mega-menu, no breadcrumbs, no sidebar nav. Below the navigation, content flows as a long-form scrolling monograph with three clear levels of hierarchy: chapter titles (huge display), section heads (medium display), body paragraphs (60ch column). Each chapter occupies 100-180vh and follows a strict structural rhythm: a Victorian-ornate header border (hand-drawn vine-and-shell SVG pattern), a chapter title centered with a roman numeral above, a 6-line drop cap opening the first paragraph, then long-form body. Section endings feature a centered ornamental dingbat. The minimal-navigation discipline is intentional: the page is structured for deep reading, not navigation hunting.

## Typography and Palette
Display and body face: Karla (Google Fonts) - the frutiger-clean spec, a humanist sans-serif with frutiger-like warm proportions - used at all hierarchy levels. Display chapter titles at clamp(64px, 10vw, 144px) with -1% tracking and 0.95 line-height. Body at 18px/1.75 - the frutiger-warmth supports long-form reading. Roman-numeral chapter labels in Karla bold at 14px tracked +10% all-caps. Drop caps three lines tall in Karla bold at 80px - the contrast of contemporary humanist drop caps against Victorian-ornate borders is the typographic signature. Pull quotes set in Karla italic at 32-44px.

Palette (coastal-blend):
- #F5EDD8 vellum-coastal (primary background, sun-bleached parchment)
- #E0D4B8 sandstone-mid (secondary surface, ornament base)
- #5A7A8A teal-sea (primary accent, drop caps, Victorian border line-work)
- #8FA8B5 seafoam-pale (secondary accent, decorative fills)
- #2A3340 indigo-deep (primary text, near-black with cool blue warmth)
- #B8884F gilt-amber (highlight, manicule pointing, chapter ornaments)
- #6B5641 driftwood-shadow (secondary text, captions, marginalia)

## Imagery and Motifs
Collage imagery: every visual is a Victorian-era engraving (botanical plates, anatomical diagrams, maritime charts, architectural drawings) overlaid with contemporary photographic textures (water surfaces, beach sand grain, weathered paper). Each collage is built in 3-4 layers: a base engraving in indigo-deep, a colored wash of teal-sea or seafoam-pale at 30% opacity, a photographic texture overlay at 12%, and occasional cut-paper "torn edge" accents. Subjects fuse Victorian and coastal: a ship's compass overlaid with starfish, an anatomical heart cross-section overlaid with ocean waves, a botanical fern overlaid with seafoam texture. Book-scholarly motifs reign: marginal manicules in gilt-amber flag footnotes, ornamental dingbats separate paragraphs, gilt-stamp circular monograms appear at chapter heads, hand-drawn vine-and-shell borders frame each chapter. Tail-piece ornaments (small decorative vignettes of shells, ferns, and waves) close each chapter.

## Prompts for Implementation
Build the site as a coastal Victorian monograph being unveiled chapter-by-chapter. Hero: full viewport. The page opens with a hand-drawn Victorian-ornate header border drawing itself in via path-draw-svg pattern (7% corpus) - the entire vine-and-shell pattern at the top of the page draws on over 3000ms using stroke-dashoffset animation. Below: the title "simai.day" in Karla at 144px centered, with subtitle "a coastal monograph" in italic. The minimal navigation (5 Roman numerals across the top) fades in over 1200ms. Use path-draw-svg pattern throughout: every chapter's ornamental border draws itself in on scroll-into-viewport, every dingbat between paragraphs draws on with stroke-dashoffset. Drop caps draw themselves in stroke-by-stroke before filling solid. Long-form body text reveals in standard fade-up over 800ms per paragraph. NO conventional CTAs, NO pricing, NO subscription forms - this is a monograph, a personal publication. Footnotes appear in the margins, connected to body text by hand-drawn gilt-amber hairlines that draw themselves in on hover. Cursor is a small manicule (pointing-hand icon, 14px) in gilt-amber that gently lifts to 16px over interactive elements - a Victorian micro-interaction. Chapter transitions feature a centered tail-piece ornament drawing itself in over 2000ms in 40vh of empty space.

## Uniqueness Notes
- Victorian-ornate aesthetic (1% corpus) crossed with coastal-blend palette (3%) - the William-Morris-by-the-sea fusion is absent from the corpus.
- Frutiger-clean typography (2% corpus) used against Victorian ornament - the contemporary-humanist-against-Victorian contrast is the design's typographic signature.
- Minimal-navigation layout (6% corpus) combined with collage imagery (5%) and book-scholarly motifs (2%) - the triple is rare and committed.
- Chosen seed: aesthetic: victorian-ornate, layout: minimal-navigation, typography: frutiger-clean, palette: coastal-blend, patterns: path-draw-svg, imagery: collage, motifs: book-scholarly, tone: authoritative
- Avoided patterns from frequency analysis: parallax (94%), card-grid (90%), photography in conventional sense (90%) - collage treatment, warm palette in gradient sense (93%) - coastal-blend structured, mono typography (81%) - none used, mysterious-moody tone (70%) - authoritative chosen instead.
