A master class in the art of refutation.
// 論破 — to demolish an argument with logic
Every argument begins with a foundational claim.
Before refutation can occur, the premise must be exposed and named. Most flawed arguments hide their assumptions in the warmth of familiarity. Drag them into the lecture hall, set them upon the marble lectern, and demand they justify themselves.
"What is asserted without evidence may be dismissed without evidence." — Hitchens
premise := axiom not yet examined
A logical fallacy is a hairline fracture in the argument's marble.
The trained scholar listens not for what is said, but for the shape of how it is said. Ad hominem attacks the speaker. Straw man rebuilds the argument as a weaker effigy. Appeal to authority hides behind the robes of the venerated.
- Ad HominemAttack the arguer, not the argument.
- Straw ManRefute a distorted version.
- False DichotomyTwo options where many exist.
- Tu Quoque"You also" — deflection by mirror.
When the fracture is found, strike once, cleanly.
Refutation is not noise. It is the precise inversion of the flawed premise. Show, in a single line, why the conclusion cannot follow. Let the strike land where the marble is thinnest.
All scholars are objective; therefore the consensus is correct.
論破 Scholars are also human. Consensus is a starting point, not a verdict.
strike := premise.invert().minimize()
A topology of argument and refutation.
Premises connect into conclusions. Refutations cut the connections. Watch the structure of a single ronpa, drawn in marble and neon.
