On the Classification of the Unknown

Each specimen herein has been observed in the field, drawn by hand, and entered into this journal under its provisional class. Where the genus is yet to be determined, the engraving stands in for the name. The reader is invited to traverse the cabinet at their own pace; some drawers open easily, while others reward only the patient eye.

Excerpts from the Margins

21 March The labyrinth specimen continues to grow when unobserved. Recommend further study under controlled conditions.

02 April Cipher fragment yields no key after 412 attempts. Pattern of solution may itself be the cipher. Catalogued provisionally.
