The Alcove

A signature concept, told as an inscription would be told — carefully, in the half-light.

There is a notion we keep returning to, here in the lower reaches: that lowering the bar is not failure but architecture. Every great building has a ground floor. Every ocean has a shore. The point of entry matters as much as the summit.

We chose to put this room underground for a reason. Down here, away from the noise of performance and status, you can hear yourself think. The drinks are honest. The conversations go deeper. And the standards? They are exactly where they need to be — low enough to welcome anyone, high enough to mean something.

“Descensus facilis Averno est.”
The descent into the underworld is easy. What you find when you arrive — that is the question worth asking.

The Ledger

A record of recent evenings, kept by hand because the screen does not remember well.

  1. Tuesday, late A linguist explained the etymology of cellar for forty-five minutes. We poured two whiskies and listened. 2 · whisky
  2. Friday, earlier Three strangers argued about whether accessible and simple are synonyms. They are not. Verdict served on the rocks. 3 · negroni
  3. Sunday, quiet A retired typographer read aloud from a 1962 manual on letterpress. Two attendees wept — politely, into their napkins. 1 · vermouth
  4. Wednesday, slow No one came until 11. Then everyone came at once. The candle held. The conversation didn't. 7 · assorted
