Blockchain Layer 2 Intelligence
Rollups have emerged as the dominant scaling paradigm for Ethereum. By executing transactions off-chain and posting compressed data on-chain, they inherit the security of the base layer while achieving orders-of-magnitude improvements in throughput and cost efficiency.
Optimistic rollups assume transaction validity by default and employ a challenge period (typically 7 days) during which any observer can submit a fraud proof. This optimistic assumption enables high throughput while maintaining security through economic incentives.
Zero-knowledge rollups generate cryptographic proofs that mathematically verify the correctness of all batched transactions. No challenge period required -- the proof itself is the guarantee. The frontier of rollup technology, where mathematics replaces trust.
Every rollup architecture makes tradeoffs between security assumptions, finality speed, data availability, and cost. The ideal rollup does not exist -- each protocol optimizes for a different corner of the design space, and the ecosystem benefits from this diversity.
The rollup landscape continues to evolve. This report captures a moment in time -- a snapshot of architectures, tradeoffs, and possibilities that will look different a year from now. That is the nature of the field. We observe, we document, we wait for the next wave.
