Mujun (The Spear and Shield)

Etymology

From Chinese, meaning "spear-shield." A merchant claims his spear can pierce any shield, and his shield can block any spear.

Description

The original contradiction paradox, attributed to Han Feizi (c. 233 BCE). Two universal claims that cannot coexist: an irresistible force and an immovable object.

The Liar Paradox

Etymology

From Epimenides the Cretan, c. 600 BCE. "All Cretans are liars."

Description

A self-referential statement that creates a logical loop. If "this statement is false" is true, then it is false; if false, then it is true. Central to studies in formal logic and the foundations of mathematics.
