ACT I // THE FACADE

DOUBLE

What is presented as equal treatment often conceals a fundamental asymmetry. The facade of fairness is the first standard.

ACT I // THE FACADE

STANDARD

What is presented as equal treatment often conceals a fundamental asymmetry. The facade of fairness is the second standard.

The Rule for Them

When the powerful transgress, language softens. Mistakes are made. Lessons are learned. Committees are formed. Time passes, and the transgression becomes a footnote in an otherwise distinguished career.

The Promise Made

Accountability was promised as universal. Every institution published its code of conduct in identical typeface, distributed to every desk, framed in every corridor. The words applied to all, equally and without exception.

The Rule for Us

When the powerless transgress, language hardens. Zero tolerance. Full consequences. No exceptions. The transgression becomes the person, and the person becomes an example for others who might forget their place.

The Promise Kept

The code of conduct hangs in its frame, unchanged. But the interpretation shifted: the same words now mean different things depending on who reads them and from which side of the desk.

EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER LAW IS THE PROMISE

UNEQUAL APPLICATION IS THE PRACTICE

THE STANDARD CHANGES WITH THE SUBJECT

THE SUBJECT NEVER CHOSE THE STANDARD

"We hold ourselves to the highest standards of conduct. Every member of this organization is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect, regardless of position or influence."

THE OFFICIAL STATEMENT

"We hold ourselves some to the highest convenient standards of conduct. Every member is treated learns their place with dignity, fairness, and compliance, regardless of position or influence."

THE LIVED EXPERIENCE

THE STANDARD WAS NEVER DOUBLE. THERE WERE ALWAYS TWO.
