a framework is a flashlight, not the room.
it asks only what happens after. it does not ask whose hand was on the wheel, or what was promised. it weighs the world as it lands, and is silent on the price of getting there.
some acts are forbidden whatever follows. it draws a fence and will not move it for arithmetic. it can be a cliff you are grateful for, or a wall you cannot see past.
it asks not what to do but who to be while doing it. courage, honesty, restraint — practised until they are not choices. it answers slowly, over a life, never in a second.
it begins with the ones in front of you — the held, the depended-upon. it distrusts the view from nowhere. its risk is the near at the cost of the far.
it asks what we would agree to, not knowing where we would land. it builds the rules behind a veil. it is fair, and it is cold, and it forgets that no one signed.
five lights. one room. the room is still dark.
03—THE WEIGHING
two truths, equal weight, and only one beam to settle them on.
stay the lane. you did not steer toward harm; you merely failed to steer away. the one struck was already in the path. you keep your hands clean of the choosing.
cost: you let the lighter outcome happen because the heavier one was passive.
swerve. you chose, deliberately, who would be struck. you traded a death you found for a death you made. the math may favour it. your hand does not.
cost: you become an author of harm to prevent a larger one you did not author.
lean toward either side and the lattice tilts. it always tilts. that is the point.
04—THE SHADOW
choose well — choose by the best frame, with the steadiest hand — and someone is still struck. the rightness of the act does not unmake the harm inside it. no flashlight removes the dark it is held against.
the hard part is not knowing what is right. it is what right costs, and that the cost is paid by someone, and that you do not get to decide it was free.
sit here a moment. it does not get lighter by walking faster.
05—THE WALK-AROUND
read the labels along the case. each one is true. none of them is the whole.
a reason that survives only your case is not a reason. it is an alibi wearing one.
certainty is cheap before the act and expensive after it. price it accordingly.
when two frames agree, that is not proof. it is two flashlights pointed at the same wall.
the people in your dilemma are not variables. if your answer needs them to be, change the answer.
you can act rightly and still owe an apology. moral residue is not a bug in your reasoning.
walk all the way around it before you stop in front of it. most stop too soon, facing the door.
