Mechanism — & what we mean
by the word.

A mechanism is the dignity of constraint. Four pivots, four links, one purposeful trajectory. Nothing is free, and freedom is not the point.

We do not address the trades. We do not address the labour. We address mechanism itself — the gear ratio, the eccentric cam, the escapement, the four-bar linkage, the load-bearing pin. These are not machines. They are arguments rendered in metal.

The party convenes around a single thesis: frictionless design culture has misunderstood what motion is for. Motion without friction is not motion. It is a slogan.

Beat the frictionless
with the red wedge.

There is a school of design that worships the absence of resistance. It calls itself seamless. It calls itself effortless. It calls itself magic.

It is none of these. It is a denial of the world. The world has friction. Friction is what allows the wheel to bite the road, the pawl to hold the load, the page to receive ink. Without friction, nothing means.

The party stands against the lie of frictionless interaction. We stand for the perceptible mechanism — the visible gear, the audible click, the small effort that proves the system is real.

A short list of those who saw first.

  1. I. El Lissitzky, poster as wedge, geometry as accusation, 1919.
  2. II. Karel Teige, typography as architecture, the page as a working drawing.
  3. III. Vladimir Tatlin, the unbuilt monument, the visible armature, the honesty of the iron.
  4. IV. Isambard K. Brunel, the chain pier, the broad gauge, the refusal of the polite scale.

Six rules,  each tilted differently.

i.

No frictionless lies.

Every interaction must declare its mechanism. The user shall hear the click.

ii.

Constraint before freedom.

A four-bar linkage moves precisely because it is unfree. Design the pivots first.

iii.

Type as iron.

Slab-serif at hero scale. The page must feel cast, not poured.

iv.

No symmetry without reason.

Symmetry is a default; the page must earn each axis it accepts.

v.

The wedge is finite.

Saturated colour appears once. Polemic capital must not be spent on decoration.

vi.

Counter-motion is the proof.

If the page only goes one way, it has not yet conceded that the reader is also moving.

Three cells,  tessellating.

Three cells. No gaps. No waste edges.

The hexagon is the bee's solution to the problem of cooperating without supervision. Each cell shares its walls. Each wall does two jobs at once. The party recommends this geometry as a model, not a metaphor.

After the leaning,
  a flat page.

Here the manifesto rests. The reader has scrolled the eight plates. The marginalia has counter-scrolled against the reading. The compass has rotated through its cardinal positions and arrived nowhere.

There is no sign up. There is no contact. There is no get started. There is only this:
