T here is a moment, when you watch a sequencer at work, where you understand that the entire edifice rests on a kind of practiced courtesy. The sequencer does not have to be honest. It chooses to be, because dishonesty would, eventually, catch up with it on the plinth. Eventually is the operative word. The fraud window is seven days, give or take, and inside those seven days the sequencer is a god of small things [citation needed].

Optimism, as a posture, is structural here. The sequencer assumes the world will not call it a liar. The world assumes the sequencer would not lie. Most of the time both assumptions hold, because the consequences of breaking them are large enough to deter. This is not trustlessness. It is cheaply repaired trust, which is its own thing, and it is the thing that runs most of the value on Layer-2 today.

You should know that I, the writer of this entry, have lost money to three of the eight specimens above. This entry is not impartial. No wiki entry is. The conceit of the neutral encyclopedia is a useful fiction — it makes the prose move — but every one of these descriptions has been written by someone who has, at one time, watched a withdrawal queue and understood that the seven-day clock was, in that moment, a fence between them and their savings. I will not pretend otherwise.

Zero-knowledge proofs change the shape of the trust, but not its presence. Instead of "trust me, and call me out within seven days," they offer "verify this small box, and ask no further questions." The small box is real. Its construction is hard. Its verification is fast. But the prover that constructed it must still have wanted to construct it correctly — and constructing it correctly is, today, expensive enough that there are real economic incentives to cut corners [citation needed].

The data-availability question is, to my mind, the most philosophically uncomfortable one. A rollup that does not publish its data is a rollup whose users cannot reconstruct the state on their own. They are, in the worst case, dependent on the kindness of strangers — strangers whom we have, with slight self-deception, organized into a "committee." The committee may be honest. The committee may be diligent. The committee may also nap. The validium specimen above has its committee depicted as five marble heads tethered by gut, which is generous; in nature, there are usually three.

Withdrawals — exits — are the narrowest part of the entire architecture. In an optimistic system, the seven-day fence. In a zero-knowledge system, the proof-generation latency. In a sovereign rollup, the question of whether there is anywhere to exit to. In a state channel, the cooperative-close versus the unilateral-close, and the punishment for cheating in the second. The plinth's last act, in every case, is to say: yes, I have heard this tablet's story, and I accept it. The yes can take seven days to arrive. We have learned to call this acceptable.

What does it mean that this is the structure of money now? It means that money has become, in the technical sense, a magazine: a stack of pages, each one summarized on the next, each summary signed and dated, each signature backed by the threat of seven days of vigil. The plinth is the binding of the magazine. The sequencer is the editor. The wiki — this wiki — is the marginalia in the gutter, the part that no one promised would be true, but that everyone reads first.

† The "magazine of money" framing is borrowed, partially, from a 2024 essay by an anonymous contributor in the Cryptoeconomic Quarterly, who has since edited their own piece five times. The framing remains — like most things in this domain — provisional.

And this, finally, is why the wiki must take its time. The technology moves at sequencer speed: forty-eight transactions a second, a state root every two minutes, a fraud-window tick every block. The reader cannot. The reader is sitting somewhere with a cup of tea, reading about marble specimens, and the marble specimens are real things made of math. The wiki is the place where the speed of the sequencer slows down to the speed of a human reading. That is a useful service. That is the only service this wiki provides.
