A vestibule of pale cyan water

The visitor arrives. There is no door, only a parting of cyan water. The lamp at the threshold dims. A single K-glyph chandelier hangs above the procession path, its filament a frozen flake of condensation.

Welcome — but more precisely, welcomed. You are not browsing. You are escorted, with the slow dignity of a baroque procession, all the way to the end. The Korean word that names this site — 까지 — means until; all the way to; as far as. Six chambers lie ahead. Each is deeper than the last.

Catechism

Questions adrift, one phrase per bubble

Ascend the questions one at a time. Each phrase is a buoyant interrogation — phrased in serif italic, allowed to drift upward through the chamber, and never answered. The point is not to answer; the point is to be asked.

Where does until end?
Whose threshold is depth?
Is arrival the same as ascent?
What does the bubble carry?
May procession be a verb?
When does water consent to glass?

III. Anatomy

Anatomy

An exploded view of 까지

Dissect the word as a baroque apothecary would dissect a flower: vowel, consonant, syllable, intention. The tongue ascends from through , the mouth opening toward an arrival it cannot quite name.

the ascending consonant double-breathing aspirate the radical of arrival syllable of destination vowel of opening — until, all the way to
i.

까 — ascending

A double-aspirate consonant, the throat closing twice before the breath escapes. The vowel opens the room. Ascent, threshold, the start of motion.

ii.

지 — arrival

A soft consonant of placement; the syllable closes the journey. Together, 까지 means until-arrival: a destination held in suspense.

iii.

까지 — composite

Particle of extent. Used to mark the limit, edge, or terminus of an action's reach. 여기까지here, until here.

IV. Procession

Procession

A frieze in horizontal motion — scroll continues, but sideways

The frieze begins at the eastern threshold and proceeds westward through the chamber. Twelve figures, robed in baroque drapery, walking kkaji — all the way to the end — in slow ceremony.

The procession does not hurry. The procession is not the means; it is the meaning. Each footfall is a syllable in the long word 까지.

And here, at the western terminus of the frieze, the floor opens. The next chamber waits below: dark water, near-black, with only pinpoint gold catching the light. Apex.

V. Apex

Apex

The deepest point. The water is near-black.

At the gravitational center of the page, the bubble field thins. Six ambient bubbles only. The caustic mesh dims to pinpricks of gold leaf catching the light.

Listen. The chamber holds. The procession pauses. Below the eye, the floor of the tank is gilded with leaf-fragments of heritage gold; above, the surface is too far to see. Here, you have arrived — almost.

까지
VI. Egress

Egress

The chamber rises. The visitor is buoyed back up.

The tank tilts. The water lifts. All eleven planes drift upward at differential rates — the front faster, the rear slowest — and the viewer is buoyed back through the chambers in reverse, surfacing toward a sky he has not yet seen.

The word 까지, in 600px serif, breaks at the seams. One hundred and twenty bubbles take its place and rise through the top of the viewport, each one carrying a fragment of the glyph — a stroke, a curve, a counter, a serif — until the word is fully dissolved into ascent.
