courts.studio is a quiet record of cloister courts photographed in the hour between vespers and dark. the studio works by candle and by post. there is no shopfront, no inquiry form, no roster of services. there is, instead, a procession of forty-eight flagstones and the patience to walk them.

ii · the outer court
where the photographer was given a single beeswax taper and one hour:

the studio's mandate is to keep what cannot be repaired without softening it: the moss-eaten stair, the verdigris on the censer, the celadon plate that has cracked along the long axis. it is the wabi-sabi position, but at scale — the grandeur of what time has done.

the photographer enters at vespers. the candles are lit by the sacristan; the studio does not request more light than the room contains. there are no strobes, no reflectors, no assistants. the silence is part of the equipment.

iv · the refectory
what the studio refuses to photograph:

weddings, in their entirety. products, in their entirety. faces under any light harsher than a single beeswax taper. food photographed for sale. interiors photographed for sale. anything photographed for sale that is not also photographed for keeping. new construction. new gilt. new marble. new anything: the studio works only with surfaces the world has already finished with. retouching. burning. dodging. saturation. the smile of a person who has been asked to smile. a child posed by an adult. a flag flown for a holiday. the act of pointing.

the studio's archive is forty-eight years old this autumn. the archive is kept in a room that has a north window and no artificial light. the negatives are cataloged by the long-form name of the room they were made in: the chapter house, the refectory, the apse, the vesting room, the gardener's lodge. there is no chronology. there is no client list. there is no fee schedule. the studio is closed to inquiries; the only address is a postal one, given in the apse of this page.

if the work is wanted, it can be written for. the post is read on the first of the month. a reply, when the studio chooses to reply, is sent on the fifteenth. there is no other channel.

v · the inner court

the inner court is photographed only after the last bell. the candles are smaller here. the photographer is, by then, no longer counted among the visitors; the abbot has gone to bed, and the cat sleeps on the lectern.
