◇ mise-en-scène

A small private screening, made for one viewer.

We treat the archetype as a paper doll held against an amber window — and the moé as the warm light passing through. The site is a hinged spread, a continuous reel unspooling in seven shots. The seam is the spine of the open book; the timecode at the top and bottom of every shot is the projector's quiet murmur.

Everything here is sincere. Smallness is a virtue. Tenderness is craft.

◇ correspondence · letter no.4

A letter from the atelier.

We keep a small lantern on in the atelier — not because the room is dark, but because it is kind to the paper. We write to you in a hand that we hope will feel like an old friend's, even if you have never read us before.

The archetypes we have drawn are not characters; they are shapes a soul might choose, the way one chooses a coat. The moé translations on the right side of this spread are the same souls, but seen at twilight, when the room is honeyed and the cat is asleep on the sill.

We do not believe in ironic distance from softness. We believe softness is a kind of attention — a way of making oneself small enough to fit through a door someone else has left ajar. When you visit this reel, you are visiting a room we have set carefully: the lantern is on, the kettle is warm, the little figures are arranged on the shelf in their honeyed amber.

Stay as long as you like. Leave whenever you must. The reel will continue.
