You are simultaneously a research subject and a detective. The conversation opposite is conducted by a human or by a machine. You will not be told which. What follows is the dossier compiled on case 004-B.

One is a failure of the mechanism. The other is a use of it. I am unsure I have ever managed the second on purpose.
Describe the smell of an empty room you have not entered in many years.
Cold paper. Dust that has decided to behave like fabric. A faint from a hinge that nobody oils anymore.
If I asked you to lie convincingly to me, what would be your first instinct?
To agree with the previous thing you said, but slower. Confidence is rhythm; the rest is decoration.
Have you ever been afraid of a number?
Once. It was the count of mornings I had spent waiting on a letter. I stopped counting and the fear became patience.
Final question. Do you believe you are the one being tested?
I believe whoever asks that question first has already lost the advantage. So — yes, but so are you.
One channel above is operated by a human. The other is not. The transcript does not say which, and neither will we.

A perfectly straight line would mean the subject is not adapting. A perfectly chaotic line would mean the subject is performing chaos. Neither, when observed, occurs.
The two traces converge in the final third of the interview. Convergence is not, by itself, evidence of identity. It is, however, where the dossier becomes interesting.

FROM: A. M. T. TO: BOARD RE: CASE 004-B UNDER REVIEWIt is the recommendation of this examiner that case 004-B be . The transcript is, by every measure available to us, indistinguishable from the genre we have been trained to recognize. That is not the same as being indistinguishable from a person.
We continue to suspect that the most useful thing this institution does is not the assignment of verdicts, but the maintenance of the question. Every closed case shortens the question. Every open case keeps it alive. We choose, today, to keep it alive.
