Tank 04, Late Afternoon

The light comes in obliquely now, breaking against the rear wall of the tank into pale ribbons. The clownfish has not moved from the anemone in nineteen minutes. Outside the glass, the reception desk is empty. Inside the glass, everything is exactly where it should be — including the second clownfish, which is sleeping above the anemone in a posture that the field guide does not document but which we have come to recognize as resting upright.

The Cleaner Wrasse Conference

A grouper has presented itself at the cleaning station for the fourth time today. Two wrasses are attending. The grouper, all jaw and patience, will hold its mouth open for as long as is necessary. The wrasses know this. So do we.

What the Mandarinfish Saw

At 17:32 a man in a charcoal suit pressed his face to the glass. The mandarinfish, occupied with a copepod, did not register the intrusion. The man stayed for forty seconds, then continued toward the elevator bank. The copepod was eaten. The exhibit was unchanged.

Lionfish, Holding

She has not moved in two hours. The filigree of her fins fans against the slow current. There is nothing aggressive in this. She is simply, completely, present — the way a corporate logo is present, the way an aquarium poster from 1986 is still present in a hallway nobody walks through.

A Quiet Hum

The filtration plant runs at 47 dB — quieter than a refrigerator, louder than thought. Visitors do not register the sound on arrival. By the time they reach the elevator bank, they will hear it everywhere — in the hallway, in their cars, at home that evening. This is, we have come to understand, the point.
