What shinonome means

Shinonome — written 東雲, the kanji for east and cloud — names a particular thirty minutes of the day. It is the pale belt of sky that hangs above the eastern horizon after the last star fades and before any color has arrived in the world. The eighth-century anthologists called this stretch yoake-mae, the moment before daybreak, and they wrote of it as if it were a kind of fabric: silk pulled thin enough to read by, but still without hue.

For a long while there was no English word for it. Twilight belongs to the evening; dawn arrives a full quarter-hour later, when the first wash of rose is already on the clouds. Shinonome is the gap between them — the listening-room between night and day, where the cypresses are still grey, the well is still grey, and the page on the writing-desk is grey, and a person can read for thirty minutes without lighting a lamp.

This site keeps that half-hour. There is one entry per morning. Tomorrow's stone is already cut; yesterday's has been carried away. Nothing here is archived, nothing is searchable, nothing is for sale. Shinonome.date is, in the most literal sense, a date — singular — set in marble for the duration of a single grey ribbon of sky.
