Quest Stage I

The Whispering Sapling

In a clearing of bent sunlight, a small sapling hums a tune older than language. Sit awhile. Listen until your name sounds new in your own ear.

  • Find the clearing of bent sunlight

Follow the moss arrows and trust the wind. The sapling is shy but stubborn.

  • Listen to the sapling's first verse

It sings in three notes -- the third one belongs to you.

  • Leave a token in return

A pebble, a pinecone, an unfinished poem. The sapling collects beginnings.

Quest Stage II

The Lantern Birch

A birch tree wears a crown of paper lanterns lit by fireflies who agreed, long ago, to retire from the night sky. Each lantern hides a question.

  • Cross the singing brook

Step on the smooth stones; the noisy ones gossip about every traveler.

  • Choose a lantern, ask a question

The fireflies answer in motion: a swirl means yes, a flicker means later, a long pause means listen again.

  • Trade a memory for a map

Choose a small memory; you will not lose it, only loan it to the bark.

Quest Stage III

The Cartographer Oak

The oldest oak in the wood has been drawing maps for a thousand years using rings and rain. Its branches diagram every path you have not yet taken.

  • Read the rings of the cartographer

Wide rings are wet years; thin rings are quiet ones. Your year is somewhere in there too.

  • Borrow a branch as a compass

It always points toward the next thing worth doing. It is rarely the easy thing.

  • Sketch a path no one has walked

The oak will copy it onto its bark and send it to the next traveler.

Quest Stage IV

The Pine of Quiet Battles

A tall pine has weathered every storm and a few invisible ones. It teaches the smallest, hardest art: standing where you are without leaving.

  • Find the wind-bent posture

Lean toward what tries to move you. Roots do the rest.

  • Practice the long breath

Inhale through three counts of needles. Exhale through five counts of bark.

  • Carry a pine cone home

It is heavier than it looks. It contains a small forest waiting for permission.

Quest Stage V

The Heartwood Throne

At the center of the wood sits a throne grown, not built, from the heartwood of every tree you have ever met. It waits for you to sit, briefly, and remember.

  • Climb the spiral root

The path winds inward. Inward is also forward; the wood agrees on that.

  • Sit on the heartwood throne

Stay until your shape settles in. Then stand and let it forget you a little.

  • Whisper a quest for the next traveler

It will reach them in a dream where a tree opens its eyes.

End of Quest, Beginning of Forest

Every grove ends and another begins. Plant a sapling in the world you return to. namu.quest will be here, listening for footsteps in the leaves.
