we entered through the catalog, expecting a known emitter. the catalog returned
null. this was disappointing. this was the entire point. an unindexed signal
is a quest. an indexed signal is a chore.
we are still looking.
[04:43:19]
a soft pulse, repeated, low amplitude, violet shoulder.
we thought it was noise.
it is not noise. it is also not what we came here for.
the lamp across the room is still on. the lens is still dusty.
we are not closing tonight.

four angles of approach.
we considered noise. ambient violet at 4.1e-7 photon flux. the pulse exceeded ambient by a full order of magnitude with periodicity now confirmed across six samples. the noise hypothesis is not survivable.
we considered instrument fault. the lens is dusty, yes, the lens is always dusty. a dirty lens does not pulse at 2.1s intervals with widening amplitude. a dirty lens is a constant. this is not a constant.
we considered the possibility that we are alone in finding it. this is acceptable. the quest does not require an audience. the quest requires honest notes. these are the notes. they are not clean. they continue.
field note, unedited
it is 4:53 in the morning and the violet keeps coming. i told myself i would
sleep at four. i did not sleep at four. i made another coffee, which is now
cold on the bench beside the keyboard, ring-stained on the desk where the previous
one sat. the lens is still dusty. i will clean the lens. i will not clean
the lens tonight. the dust is part of the apparatus now and we do not interrupt
a quest to clean an instrument that is already telling the truth.
six pulses, periodicity 2.1 seconds, amplitude rising in a slow geometric. this
is a planet. this is not a planet. this is an instrument echo. this is
not an instrument echo, we ruled that out at 04:46. it could be a slow rotator,
a chirped pulsar in spindown, a violet maser in a molecular cloud we never named.
it could be a thing we do not yet have a name for. the catalog is silent. the
catalog is, in fact, the silence we are listening into.
i am writing this down because i do not want to remember it differently in the
morning. i will publish a clean version of this log. i will not publish a
clean version. the strikethroughs are part of the data. the spilled coffee at
04:44 is part of the data. the lamp across the room casting violet bokeh across
the whole room is part of the data. when the lamp goes out the quest goes out
with it. for now the lamp is still on.
we did not find it tonight. we are not stopping.
