Chapter Two

The pretense begins to crack.

Some doors are heavier than others, but they are still only doors. The marble was painted on. The velvet rope is just rope.

Luxury sells exclusion. It tells you a place is valuable because most cannot enter. We were taught to read this language fluently — the gold leaf, the heavy serif, the thresholds we are not meant to cross.

But this is a bar that is being lowered. With each scroll, an ornament is removed. With each scroll, a barrier dissolves. What remains is what was always there: a room, a door, a welcome.

Lower the bar.

It is a strange instruction. We have been told the opposite all our lives. Aim higher. Reach further. Earn more. Prove worth.

Technology should be a public utility, not a credential.

If the tools require a guild to operate them, the tools have failed. Lower the bar to building.

Education is not a tower. It is a sidewalk.

A sidewalk has no entrance. You step onto it where you are. Lower the bar to learning.

Starting a thing should not require permission.

The kitchen is open. The chairs are unstacked. Lower the bar to beginning.
