The Emperor of Japan

TASK: just... be the Emperor. Surely that's enough?

THE RETURN

A heavenly procession descends on a cloud. The Emperor's two thousand guards are useless — their bows go slack, their arms go numb. Kaguya puts on the feather robe and forgets her grief for Earth in a single instant.

“Now I must put on this robe of feathers; how sorrowful I feel, remembering my lord.”

She leaves a letter and an elixir of immortality for the Emperor. He carries it to the highest peak in the land and burns it — what is the point of living forever without her? The mountain smokes to this day. They call it Fuji: the mountain of the immortal, the mountain that is never short of soldiers, the mountain that still cannot stop reaching for the moon.
