They draped the robe of feathers across her shoulders, and at once all earthly sorrow fell away from her like rain from a leaf. She did not turn. She rose through the white road of light, and the old bamboo cutter, who had carried her in cupped hands when she was no larger than a thumb, called and called from the courtyard — but a robe of feathers does not hear, and the moon does not give back what it has lent.
