Heisei
"Achieving Peace" — the era of Emperor Akihito.
A thirty-year window opened on January 8, 1989, and quietly closed on April 30, 2019. In its passage, Japan transformed — economically humbled, culturally exported, technologically reinvented, and shaken by storms both natural and social. This is a curator's chronicle of those years.

01 / Technology
The Heisei years began with bulky brick phones and ended with the world in a glass rectangle. In between: the pocket pager (ポケベル), the flip phone with its keitai novel boom, the curious Japan-only world of i-mode, and finally the smartphone — a device whose ubiquity quietly unmade decades of public-facing infrastructure.
By 2007, three out of four high-school students in Tokyo carried a phone capable of writing a novel. By 2019, those same students could not remember a time before broadband.
02 / Pop Culture
The Heisei era was when Japan, having stopped exporting cars long enough to catch its breath, began exporting dreams. Akira arrived in 1988 on the eve of the era; by its end, Spirited Away, Pokémon, and Studio Ghibli had become a shared global vocabulary. J-Pop idol groups grew from television curiosities into stadium institutions.
In the corner of a Shibuya record shop, the era's most enduring sound was perhaps the quietest: city pop reissues spinning on imported turntables, finding a second life on streaming platforms three decades later.

03 / Natural History
The Great Hanshin earthquake of January 1995 cracked the prosperity narrative; the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011 — and the long shadow of Fukushima — redefined what national resilience meant.
In their wake came a quieter civic vocabulary: 絆 ("kizuna," bonds), volunteer convoys, candlelight at temple steps, and a generation that learned how quickly the ground itself could be borrowed.
04 / Political Economy
The Bubble burst in 1991. What followed was not the catastrophe outsiders sometimes describe, but a long, deliberate recalibration — deflation, demographic shift, restructured employment, and the slow ascent of women into a workforce that had long pretended it did not need them.
By the close of Heisei, the question was not whether Japan had lost something, but what the rest of the world had quietly learned to call normal.

An era closes the way it opened — quietly, in a single calligraphed character. 令和 means "beautiful harmony." Whatever the next thirty years bring, the chronicle of Heisei is now complete: thirty-one volumes, bound in warm paper, shelved in good light.
