DIVE COMMENCING
Scroll to descend
Depth Range: 0 - 200m
Light Level: 100% - 1%
Temperature: 22°C - 15°C
The photic zone. Sunlight penetrates these waters, fueling photosynthesis and supporting the greatest concentration of marine life. Coral reefs, schooling fish, and the vast majority of ocean productivity exists within this thin upper layer.
Our submersible begins its descent through warm, sunlit waters. Visibility is high. Instruments nominal.
Depth Range: 200 - 1000m
Light Level: < 1%
Temperature: 15°C - 4°C
The mesopelagic zone. Light fades rapidly here, creating a perpetual dusk. Many species perform diel vertical migration -- rising to feed at night, retreating to darkness by day. Bioluminescence becomes increasingly common.
External lights engaged. First bioluminescent signatures detected on forward sensors. Adjusting instruments for low-light observation.
Depth Range: 1000 - 4000m
Light Level: 0%
Temperature: 4°C - 2°C
Pressure: 100 - 400 atm
The bathypelagic zone. No sunlight reaches here. The water is near-freezing, and pressure is immense. Life exists in sparse pockets -- deep-sea anglerfish, giant isopods, and fragile gelatinous creatures adapted to eternal darkness.
All external light sources now primary. Hull pressure nominal. Sonar returns show sparse terrain. Bioluminescent contacts increasing on all vectors.
Depth Range: 4000 - 6000m
Light Level: 0%
Temperature: 2°C - 1°C
Pressure: 400 - 600 atm
The abyssopelagic zone. The vast abyssal plains -- the largest habitat on Earth -- stretch endlessly in all directions. Hydrothermal vents punctuate the ocean floor, creating oases of chemosynthetic life in an otherwise barren landscape.
Approaching abyssal plain. Seafloor terrain visible on sonar. Thermal signatures detected bearing 045 -- possible hydrothermal vent field. Adjusting course for closer observation.
Depth Range: 6000 - 11000m
Light Level: 0%
Temperature: 1°C - 1°C
Pressure: 600 - 1100 atm
The hadopelagic zone. Named for Hades, the Greek god of the underworld. These are the deepest ocean trenches -- the Mariana Trench reaches 10,994 meters. Pressure exceeds 1,000 atmospheres. And yet, life persists. Amphipods, xenophyophores, and microbial communities thrive in this crushing darkness.
Maximum depth achieved. Hull integrity holding. We have reached the deepest point of the ocean. The quest is complete.
Maximum depth: 11,000m
