Institute for Contemplative Inquiry & Formal Research

01.

About the Institute

Senggack is a research institution dedicated to the rigorous study of contemplative traditions, formal inquiry, and the intersections of Eastern and Western epistemological frameworks. Founded on the principle that deep knowledge emerges from sustained attention, the Institute supports scholars whose work demands patience, precision, and an unwavering commitment to intellectual integrity.

Our mission extends beyond the conventional boundaries of academic research. We seek to preserve and advance methodologies of inquiry that have been refined over centuries -- approaches that value depth over breadth, understanding over information, and wisdom over data. In an era of accelerating superficiality, Senggack stands as a deliberate counterpoint: a place where thinking is allowed to take the time it requires.

Est. 2024 The Institute was established to address the growing need for sustained contemplative research in an age of fragmented attention.

The Institute maintains collaborative relationships with university departments, independent scholars, and research foundations across East Asia, Europe, and North America. Our fellowship program supports researchers at all career stages who demonstrate a commitment to the kind of careful, unhurried scholarship that produces lasting contributions to human understanding.

Research Programs

The Institute's research activities are organized into three principal programs, each addressing a distinct dimension of contemplative inquiry while maintaining deep interconnections with the others.

Formal Methods in Contemplative Practice

This program investigates the logical and structural foundations of contemplative traditions across cultures. Researchers examine how formal systems of reasoning -- from Buddhist logic to Aristotelian syllogistics -- have been employed to articulate and validate insights arising from meditative and reflective practice.1

"The most profound insights often emerge not from the accumulation of new information, but from the sustained and disciplined attention to what is already known."

-- Institute Charter, Preamble

Epistemological Frameworks

A comparative study of how different philosophical traditions construct, validate, and transmit knowledge. This program pays particular attention to the methodological innovations of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese scholarly traditions, examining their relevance to contemporary problems in epistemology and philosophy of mind.2

Archival & Documentary Studies

This program focuses on the preservation, digitization, and critical analysis of primary source materials related to contemplative traditions. The Institute maintains a growing digital archive of manuscripts, commentaries, and scholarly correspondence spanning six centuries.3

The Archive

The Senggack Archive houses one of the most comprehensive collections of contemplative manuscripts in East Asia. Spanning materials from the fourteenth century to the present, the archive includes handwritten commentaries, printed monographs, personal correspondence between scholars, and a growing collection of oral history recordings.

Access to the physical archive is available by appointment to credentialed researchers. The digital archive, currently comprising over 12,000 scanned documents with full-text search capability, is accessible to Institute fellows and affiliated scholars through the secure research portal.

"An archive is not merely a repository of the past. It is an active instrument of inquiry -- a place where the careful reader discovers not what was intended to be found, but what was too important to be discarded."

-- Director's Address, Annual Meeting, 2024

Notes

1.

The program draws particularly on the Dignaga-Dharmakirti tradition of Buddhist epistemology and its systematic approach to valid cognition (pramana), examining parallels with Western analytical philosophy.

2.

Recent work in this program has focused on the concept of "embodied knowing" in Korean Neo-Confucian philosophy, particularly the writings of Yi Hwang (Toegye) and their implications for contemporary philosophy of mind.

3.

The digital archive project, launched in 2024, has received support from the Korean National Research Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
