Archive Timeline

1962

The first prototype exhibition opens at the World's Fair -- a chrome dome filled with imaginary consumer electronics from the year 2000.

1975

A collector in Tokyo discovers a crate of unreleased consumer prototypes from a shuttered electronics manufacturer. The archive begins.

1988

Prototype photography becomes an underground art form. Collectors document discontinued concepts under tungsten studio lighting.

1996

The golden age of Y2K futurism. Chrome interfaces, bubble shapes, and starburst decorations define a generation of concept products.

2000

Midnight strikes. The future arrives, and it looks nothing like the prototypes predicted. The archive gains a melancholic significance.

2024

prototype.report launches -- a digital time capsule preserving the optimism, naivete, and beauty of futures that never arrived.

Every prototype is a letter to the future.

Some arrive. Most are returned to sender, marked with the gentle stamp of obsolescence. Here, in this archive, they are read at last -- not for their accuracy, but for their optimism.
