The Material

Observation

Before making, there is seeing. The workshop begins with silence — a careful inventory of constraints, possibilities, and the grain of the problem itself. Every material has a grain; every question has a direction it naturally wants to flow.

The first version is never right, and that is the point. Each prototype is a question asked in three dimensions — a physical hypothesis tested against reality. The workshop floor is littered with beautiful failures that taught essential truths.

Define the constraint

Every worthy prototype begins with a limitation embraced as a creative partner. The constraint is not the enemy of invention — it is the soil from which invention grows. State the problem in one sentence. If you cannot, you do not yet understand it.

Shape the first form

Move quickly. The first prototype should take hours, not weeks. Use the cheapest materials. Cut with rough hands. The goal is not beauty but understanding — a three-dimensional sketch that makes the invisible visible.
