The tree metaphor — roots anchoring in known ground, trunk rising through proven knowledge, branches reaching toward speculation — captures this structure precisely.

The dopamine hit arrives when disparate ideas suddenly cohere. A fragment read three months ago suddenly illuminates a current problem. A technique from one domain applies unexpectedly to another. These moments of synthesis are the real work. Everything else — the organization, the annotation, the careful documentation — serves to create conditions for synthesis to occur.

Knowledge is not a flat surface but a treescape. Understanding means learning to climb the branches and see how they relate to the whole structure.

Every tree begins as a seed: a single question, a nagging curiosity, a refusal to accept the surface explanation. From that seed, roots descend into source material while branches extend toward implication. The canopy — the full spread of understanding — is never truly complete. There are always new branches to grow.
