Surface Layer

At the surface, the earth appears stable. Rock formations hold their shape across millennia, presenting an illusion of permanence. But beneath this veneer, immense thermal gradients drive continuous deformation. Every mountain is a wave, frozen mid-crest. The crust is merely the cooled skin of a molten body, a boundary layer no thicker in proportion than the shell of an egg.

Mantle Convection

Temperature increases 25-30 degrees Celsius per kilometer of depth. At the core-mantle boundary, temperatures exceed 4,000 Kelvin. Lithostatic pressure transforms mineral structures. Olivine becomes spinel, then perovskite. The same atoms, rearranged by force. Mantle rock flows like glass over geological time. Convection cells spanning thousands of kilometers drive plate tectonics above.

Core Dynamics

At the innermost boundary, solid iron crystallizes under pressures exceeding 360 gigapascals. The inner core rotates at a slightly different rate than the surface, a planet within a planet. This differential generates the magnetic field that shields all life above. Here, in the absolute darkness beneath 6,371 kilometers of rock and metal, matter exists in states unknown at the surface.

Critical Threshold

Everything that appears permanent is merely slow. Given sufficient time and energy, all structures yield. Mountains dissolve. Continents drift apart like fragments of a broken vessel. The distinction between solid and liquid is a question of timescale. At geological pace, granite flows. At cosmological pace, stars are ephemeral. Phase Transition
