The Longitude Problem

For centuries, sailors traversed the open ocean with no reliable way to determine their east-west position. Latitude could be read from the stars, but longitude remained an enigma -- a mathematical ghost that haunted every voyage. Ships were lost at sea, fleets scattered, fortunes swallowed by the vast indifference of the Atlantic. The sea did not care that you did not know where you were. It simply continued being the sea.

Harrison's Obsession

In 1714, the British Parliament offered a prize of 20,000 pounds to anyone who could solve the longitude problem. John Harrison, a self-taught carpenter from Yorkshire, devoted his entire life to building a clock that could keep time at sea. His chronometer, the H4, was a masterpiece of mechanical devotion -- a pocket-sized instrument that could tell a captain his exact position on the featureless ocean. It took him forty years.

The Prime Meridian

Greenwich was chosen. An arbitrary line through an arbitrary building in an arbitrary city became the center of all earthly measurement. The Prime Meridian -- invisible, weightless, yet absolute. Every place on Earth defined by its angular distance from this line. A fiction so useful it became indistinguishable from truth.

Harrison's chronometer changed everything. Once a ship could carry the time of a known meridian, longitude was no longer a mystery -- it was arithmetic. And yet, the lines themselves remain invisible. You can stand on the Prime Meridian in Greenwich, feet planted on the brass strip in the courtyard of the Royal Observatory, and feel absolutely nothing. The line is a thought. A consensus.
