THE NECROPOLIS OF DATA

A speculative archive where deleted files, deprecated code, abandoned websites and obsolete data formats are recovered, cataloged, and given new purpose.

STRATUM 01

DELETED // NOT FORGOTTEN

Every file dragged into a desktop trash icon since 1984 left an afterimage on a magnetic platter, a flash cell, an SSD page mapped to oblivion. We harvest these residues, reconstruct their headers, and re-issue them as readable artifacts of a lost private internet.

The first stratum holds the most recent dead: configs from yesterday, drafts from last hour, a screenshot the operating system already overwrote in metadata but not in silicon.

THE ABANDONED WEB

Geocities, Angelfire, Tripod, the personal homepages of the 1990s. Tiled backgrounds in CSS-illegal hex codes. Animated GIFs of construction workers under "UNDER CONSTRUCTION" banners. Guestbooks with seven entries, the last from 2003.

We rescue these pages from the Wayback Machine's cold storage and reframe them as folk monuments — the first amateur architecture of the internet, built by hand in Notepad.exe.

DEAD LANGUAGES // LIVE GHOSTS

Source code in COBOL, FORTRAN II, dBase III, ActionScript 2, Adobe Director Lingo, AppleScript Studio, Visual Basic 6. Codebases that ran a hospital, a refinery, a stock exchange, a school district payroll — until they were declared deprecated and quietly replaced by something with a friendlier logo.

THE OBSOLETE FORMATS

RealAudio. Shockwave. JPEG-2000. The Microsoft Word 97 binary that no application opens cleanly anymore. WordPerfect codepages with their secret control sequences. We hold the readers, the parsers, the codecs that the rest of the world has thrown away.

JPEG RESURRECTION // LIVE

Watch a corrupted JPEG slowly reconstruct itself in real time. Each tile in the grid below represents a discrete cosine transform block being recovered from disk noise. The process is deliberately slow — recovery is not a click, it is a vigil.

RECOVERED FRAGMENTS

Not every recovered file is whole. Many arrive as fragments — a few hundred bytes that hint at something larger. We catalog these as poems of the disk: partial sentences, half-rendered images, melody bars that stop mid-phrase.

THE PROTOCOL

Submit a dead disk, a dying optical platter, a USB stick that no operating system will mount, an email account whose provider shut down without warning. The protocol does not promise restoration. The protocol promises remembrance.

  1. 01SEALSource media is sealed and assigned a sigil. The sigil follows the data through every subsequent stage.
  2. 02IMAGEA bit-for-bit image is taken under a Faraday cage. The original media is never written to.
  3. 03CARVEFile-carving routines extract recognizable signatures — PNG, ZIP, PDF, MP3, custom corporate formats.
  4. 04CATALOGEach artifact receives a stratum number, a path, and a metadata stub describing what it likely was.
  5. 05DISPLAYArtifacts are displayed in this archive at random intervals. Visitors decide what each fragment meant.

END OF TRANSMISSION

The bottom of the archive is not the bottom. There are deeper strata that have not yet been excavated. New deletions occur every nanosecond. The recovery pipeline never empties. The archive only grows downward.

Until the next descent, the timeline holds steady at this depth. The hex rain continues. The corruption bands shift one pixel every fifteen seconds, slowly, in case anyone is watching.
