02H / Atelier opening

A study in graphite, paper, and patient hands

penclo

An atelier for the slow ritual of putting graphite to paper—
composed entirely from cedar, carbon, and the memory of touch.

i.

Cedar, dressed and
quarter-sawn.

Each pencil casing begins as a slat of incense cedar, pressed and slow-dried until the grain falls true. The wood is chosen not for hardness but for the way it parts under a sharpener: clean, fragrant, in a single curling shaving.

Graphite, fired
at 1100°C.

A blend of pure Ceylon graphite, French clay, and trade-secret quantities of carbon black. Pressed into rods, fired in a reducing atmosphere, and bathed in waxes that draw down density without dulling the line.

The hand,
repeating itself.

A craftsperson’s hand learns a single gesture across thousands of mornings. The pressure of the press, the angle of the chamfer, the half-turn of the ferrule. Mastery is not a ceremony — it is a quiet repetition.

06B / Pressure, density, the dark field

a meditation, set in 6B

The line is
not the drawing.
The pressure is.

Six grades softer than HB, the 6B core releases its carbon at the slightest insistence. The page receives more than it asks for. Restraint becomes the only honest discipline — a craft of withholding rather than applying.

Hardness
6B · very soft
Pigment load

The page is
still empty.
That, too, is mastery.

penclo is a small studio in the Sierra foothills. We make pencils slowly, by hand, in editions of three hundred. There is no shop here, only a workshop — and the long, patient work of a single, attentive line.
