What is fog?

Fog is a cloud that touches the ground. Fog computing is a cloud that touches the device. Both are accidents of elevation. Both are temporary. Both will burn off by noon unless the conditions persist.

CHAPTER 02 / HOW

Fog computing, in three steps

01 Move computation closer to the source. The cloud descends until it touches the device.
02 Accept that humidity is now part of the system. Condensation is a feature; warmth is a feature.
03 Render every readout in burnt-orange light, so the operator can find the dashboard at 2 AM in heavy fog.

The future, softened

Y2K Futurism promised translucent plastic, orbital curves, and chrome. The future delivered server farms. misty.day reconciles the two by running the demo on a machine left outside in the weather.

Glossary, abridged

fog (n.): a cloud at ground level; an interface that has not yet resolved.
ember (n.): a particle of light, drifting upward, fading on its own schedule.
ripple (n.): a concentric ring of attention, expanding from the point of contact.
chrome (n.): the conviction, c. 1999, that surfaces could be both reflective and friendly.
