For centuries, sailors could look to the stars and know how far north or south they had traveled. But the other half of the equation -- how far east or west -- remained the deadliest unsolved problem in navigation. Ships ran aground on unseen coasts. Fleets drifted hundreds of miles off course. Thousands perished because no one could answer a simple question: what is our longitude?

The problem was not merely academic. It was written in shipwrecks and lost cargoes, in the bones of sailors who never found their way home. Longitude was the invisible coordinate, the measurement that required mastering time itself.

John Harrison, a self-taught Yorkshire carpenter, spent forty years building a clock that could keep time at sea. His fourth attempt -- the H4 -- was the size of a pocket watch and lost only five seconds on a nine-week voyage to Jamaica. It was the answer that astronomers refused to accept.

Twenty-five nations sent delegates. The question: where on the face of the Earth should the line of zero longitude be drawn? France lobbied for Paris. The Americans argued for Washington. But two-thirds of the world's shipping already used charts referenced to the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. On October 22, 1884, by a vote of 22 to 1 with 2 abstentions, the world agreed: the line ran through England.
