What is a dilemma?

A dilemma is not a problem waiting to be solved. It is the recognition that certain choices cannot be optimized, only navigated. Where a problem has a solution, a dilemma has only consequences -- each path taken forecloses another, and the foreclosed path remains forever luminous with possibility.

The word derives from the Greek di-lemma: two propositions. Not two options, but two truths that cannot coexist. The dilemma is not that you must choose, but that both choices are valid.

What a dilemma is not

It is not indecision. Indecision is the failure to act; a dilemma is the impossibility of acting without loss. It is not a puzzle, because puzzles have solutions. It is not a paradox, because paradoxes are logical contradictions. A dilemma is something worse: a situation where logic works perfectly and still offers no escape.

Every genuine dilemma leaves a residue -- the quiet knowledge that you could have chosen otherwise, and that the other choice was not wrong.

Every path not taken continues in the imagination, perfect and untested.

The dilemma does not end when you choose. It transforms. The unchosen path becomes a ghost that walks beside you, whispering what might have been. This is not regret -- it is the proof that your choice mattered. Only trivial decisions leave no residue.

The fork in the road does not disappear behind you.
It stays where it is, waiting for the next traveler.
