Before the spectacle, there was the disciplined page: columns aligned to the millimeter, headlines cut with civic purpose, photographs arriving from darkrooms like evidence from another weather system.
The institution was never innocent, but it understood gravity. Ink stained fingers; paper kept a crease; the front page still pretended the public square could share one tempo.
