The hydrophone has been listening since before we named it. What we hear is a small window of the sea speaking in its own language — compression waves, harmonic echoes, the quiet percussion of sand shifting at the abyssal plain. bada (바다) means sea. moe (萌え) means the tender, almost unbearable affection one feels for something alive and loved.
바다 is the word, and inside the word is a smaller word — the sound of water arriving. When the tide pulls out, the shore is not empty; it is full of small evidence. Shells placed by no hand. A horseshoe crab trail cursive with memory. The sea retreats only to lean in again. Depth, here, is not measured in metres. Depth is the distance between the signal and the listener who chooses to receive it.
