PPUZZL

publisher of impossible puzzles

§

We publish puzzles that cannot be solved in the waking world. Each edition is a cartography of the impossible — a map whose territory exists only in the liminal space between deduction and dream. Our puzzles do not reward the clever; they unsettle the certain. They are composed in the margins of mathematics, set in type by hands that tremble with the knowledge that every solution creates a deeper question. Since our founding in the year of the long tide, PPUZZL has issued forty-seven volumes of unsolvable riddles, each bound in salt-stiffened linen and stamped with a colophon that changes each time you look away. We do not seek readers. Readers find us — in the spaces between bookshelves, in the pause before sleep, in the half-second glitch when your screen refreshes and the text you were reading has subtly rearranged itself.

The Collection

PPZZL-001

The Cartographer's Dilemma

A map that leads to itself. Every road ends where another begins, and the compass rose blooms into a question.

PPZZL-007

Marginalia of the Drowned

Annotations found in a waterlogged codex. The ink has migrated to adjacent pages, forming new sentences no author intended.

PPZZL-013

The Librarian's Recursion

A catalog that contains its own entry. Filed under both “beginning” and “end,” it occupies no shelf and every shelf.

PPZZL-021

Salt Equation

A formula whose variables are tidal. It balances only at the precise moment between high water and low, then dissolves.

PPZZL-034

The Compositor's Tremor

A typeset page where every letter has shifted by one point in an unmeasurable direction. The text is legible but wrong.

PPZZL-042

Nocturne for Closed Eyes

A puzzle visible only in the afterimage when you look away. The solution is the shape your retina remembers.

&

Founded in the year of the long tide, PPUZZL operates from a coastal library whose location shifts with the equinox.

All editions are printed on salt-stiffened linen using movable type cast from reclaimed lighthouse brass.

Inquiries may be addressed to the margin of any book you are currently not reading. We will find your message.

No puzzle has been solved. Several have been dreamt. One was nearly understood by a mathematician who immediately forgot.
