gabs.cafe — the cost of things.

entry 01 / cost

The price arrives before the object.

A number is pinned to the cup, then the cup becomes accountable to it. Clay, labor, rent, weather, memory: all reduced to a figure written with a pencil that has already lost half its length.

entry 02 / value

Value is the part that refuses arithmetic.

The ledger has a column for price and a blank margin for everything else. The margin is where the owner hesitates, where the hand makes the same figure twice, where worth escapes the ruler.

entry 03 / depreciation

Every asset swims downstream.

The chair loses value by being sat in. The counter gains value by being touched. The market only records one of these movements, so the other survives as a stain.

entry 04 / receipt

The total is never the ending.

The receipt curls in the palm. Its ink begins to leave before the purchase can become memory. You paid. That is not the same as understanding what it cost.
