CAUSALITY

a private salon for those who suspect every answer conceals another question

TONIGHT'S PROVOCATION

If every effect is born of a cause, then who lights the first match?

SCROLL HORIZONTALLY
CHAMBER II

On Inevitability

THESIS

The chain is unbroken.

Every collision of particles was written into the fabric of the cosmos the moment the first atom flared. Free will is the sweetest illusion we have ever distilled, the fermented grape of consciousness.

Determinism is not a prison. It is the elegance of a theorem that cannot disagree with itself.

ANTITHESIS

The moment breathes.

Every choice is a small rebellion against prediction. The universe is not a clock; it is a conversation whose next sentence has not yet been spoken.

To act is to snip a thread that existed only as possibility until the scissors arrived.

CHAMBER III

On Memory

THESIS

The past authors us.

We are the residue of every breakfast, every slammed door, every overheard lullaby. The self is not an origin but a sediment.

To know a person is to excavate the causes that pressed them into their present shape.

ANTITHESIS

Memory is a forgery.

Recollection is reconstruction. The past exists only as a rumour the brain tells itself each morning, polished by whatever story tonight requires.

What we call "history" is a confession that keeps changing its alibi.

CHAMBER IV

On Consequence

THESIS

Every act is a ripple.

A kind word spoken in a stairwell becomes, six decades later, a revolution or a ruin. There are no small gestures — only slow ones.

Morality is the study of how far our fingerprints can travel without us.

ANTITHESIS

Every act dissolves.

The cosmos is indifferent. Entropy devours intention. The gesture, however noble, is absorbed into the static long before history bothers to notice.

Consequence is the word we use when we cannot bear to call the world forgetful.

CHAMBER V

On Beginnings

THESIS

There must be a first cause.

An infinite regress is an elegant suicide. Somewhere, something simply was — a quiet, uncaused flame from which the rest of the universe borrowed its light.

Call it God, call it the vacuum, call it nothing. It remains the only sentence with no margin above it.

ANTITHESIS

There is no first.

Time may be a loop, a möbius, a self-referential verse. The universe could be its own grandmother, its own grandchild, its own unfinished manuscript.

To demand a beginning is to confuse storytelling with metaphysics.

CHAMBER VI

The Causation Stream

watch an idea travel from seed to river

SEED
a thought, unuttered
SPARK
a question, whispered
LEAF
an argument, furled
FLAME
a conviction, burning
RIPPLE
a consequence, widening
RIVER
a world, rewritten
CHAMBER VII

The Amphitheater

two voices, one silence between them

VOICE — EAST
"We do not own our lives. We are tenants of the causes that made us."

To accept the chain is to be released from it. The one who knows the river cannot choose its bed is free to sing upon its surface.

— read, unhurried
CONVERGENCE
VOICE — WEST
"We author the cause by daring to name it. The river listens to the first who sings."

To act is to complete a sentence the universe left trailing. The chain extends because we chose to forge the next link.

— replied, with warmth
CHAMBER VIII · RESOLUTION

Perhaps the cause and the effect are the same motion, observed from different seats in the theatre.

There is no verdict tonight. The salon reopens when the next question arrives.
