Consonant Origins

Each consonant maps to a position of the tongue, lips, or throat during articulation. King Sejong designed the basic shapes to mirror the speech organs themselves.

Creation

King Sejong the Great completes the design of Hangul (originally called Hunminjeongeum, "The Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People").

1446

Promulgation

The Hunminjeongeum manuscript is published, containing explanations of the new script's design principles and usage.

1894

Official Script

Hangul becomes the official script of Korea through the Gabo Reform, ending centuries of Classical Chinese dominance in official documents.

1997

UNESCO Recognition

The Hunminjeongeum manuscript is registered as a UNESCO Memory of the World, recognizing Hangul's unique scientific design.
