EXHIBIT A — SALEM, 1692

The trials began with whispers in a parsonage. In January 1692, young girls in Salem Village began exhibiting strange behaviors — contortions, screaming fits, claims of invisible torment. The local physician, unable to find a natural cause, suggested the supernatural. Within weeks, three women were accused: Tituba, Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne — the enslaved, the impoverished, the infirm. The pattern was already clear.

By the time the Court of Oyer and Terminer was established in May, the accusations had metastasized. Spectral evidence — testimony that the accused's spirit had appeared to the witness — was admitted as proof. The machinery of persecution needed only the flimsiest inputs to produce its verdicts.

Nineteen were hanged. One was crushed. Hundreds were accused. The trials lasted barely a year, but they left a permanent scar on the American conscience — and established the template that every subsequent witch trial would follow: fear of the other, amplification through official channels, spectral evidence that cannot be disproved, and a community that chose complicity over courage.

THE INQUISITION

For three centuries, the machinery of the Inquisition processed bodies and souls with the efficiency of a bureaucracy that had refined persecution into an administrative science. Established in 1231 by Pope Gregory IX, the institution evolved from an ad-hoc response to heresy into a permanent apparatus of doctrinal enforcement — complete with standardized procedures, professional interrogators, and an archive system that would be the envy of any modern intelligence agency.

The Malleus Maleficarum, published in 1487, provided the operational manual. It codified the identification, interrogation, and conviction of witches into a systematic process that any literate cleric could follow. The book was a bestseller — second only to the Bible in sales for nearly two centuries.

EXHIBIT C — WASHINGTON, 1950–1954

On February 9, 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy stood before the Republican Women's Club of Wheeling, West Virginia, and held aloft a sheet of paper. "I have here in my hand a list," he declared, "of 205 names known to the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party." The number changed with each retelling — 205, 81, 57 — but the mechanism was the same as it had always been: an accusation, amplified by authority, impossible to disprove.

The blacklist destroyed careers, fractured families, and drove some to suicide. Actors, writers, directors, teachers, government employees — anyone could be named, and naming was conviction. The accused were not charged with crimes but with associations, with sympathies, with having attended the wrong meeting or read the wrong book a decade earlier.

THE DIGITAL MOB

The architecture has changed but the anatomy remains identical. Where Salem had the meetinghouse, we have the platform. Where McCarthy had the Senate hearing, we have the viral thread. The accusation still begins with a whisper — now a screenshot, a quote taken out of context, a years-old post resurface by an anonymous account. The amplification is still institutional — now algorithmic, optimized for engagement, which is to say optimized for outrage.

The machine operates the same way in every century. Only the vocabulary changes. Heresy becomes communism becomes problematic. The pyre becomes the blacklist becomes the ratio. The crowd remains the crowd.
