where contradiction becomes craft
We build at the intersection of contradiction. Every project begins with a tension — between precision and chaos, between the algorithmic and the handmade, between what data reveals and what intuition knows. We believe the most compelling design emerges not from resolution but from the productive friction of opposites held in creative suspension.
Our practice is rooted in generative systems: mathematical frameworks that produce organic, unpredictable outcomes. We write rules so that beauty can break them. We design constraints so that surprise can emerge within them. The spear and the shield, working together.
A living brand system for a computational biology lab. The identity generates unique organic forms from the lab's own research data — every paper published reshapes the visual identity, making the brand a living reflection of the science it represents.
An interactive installation mapping urban migration patterns as topographic landscapes. Census data becomes mountain ranges; demographic shifts become tectonic forces. Visitors walk through a city they recognize but have never seen.
A creative tool that generates design compositions from contradictory constraints. Feed it "minimal and ornate" or "geometric and organic" and it produces visual solutions that hold both truths simultaneously.
Our creative process is itself a contradiction: rigorous yet intuitive, systematic yet serendipitous. We begin each project by mapping the tensions inherent in the brief — the opposing forces that most studios would resolve into a single direction. Instead, we hold them open. We write algorithms that embody both poles of the contradiction, then let the generative process explore the vast space between them. What emerges is never quite what we expected, and that is precisely the point. The best outcomes are the ones that surprise even their creators. We iterate not toward convergence but toward the most productive divergence — the configuration of contradiction that generates the most compelling form. Every pixel, every curve, every typographic decision carries the DNA of this tension. The spear and the shield are not enemies. They are collaborators, and the work they produce together is more interesting than either could achieve alone.
