Aurora Frequencies Detected

Station GUR.AL has maintained continuous aurora frequency monitoring since commissioning in 1974. All observations are cataloged according to the Nordic Geomagnetic Index Protocol (NGIP-7) and cross-referenced with solar wind data from the Tromsø Geophysical Observatory.

Current detection array operates across 50 frequency bands in the visible spectrum, with primary sensitivity calibrated to oxygen emission lines at 557.7nm and 630.0nm.

Observation window: continuous, 24-hour cycle. Peak activity recorded during magnetic midnight ±3 hours.

The monitoring array occupies a promontory of grey basalt at latitude 69.6496 north, longitude 18.9560 east, on the windward coast of a narrow island in the Norwegian Sea. The installation was originally commissioned by the Directorate of Geophysical Observation in autumn of 1974, when it was determined that the magnetic declination at this position offered optimal sensitivity to auroral electron precipitation events.

The facility consists of a primary observation dome (decommissioned 2019), three passive antenna masts arranged in equilateral configuration at 40-meter spacing, and the terminal building — a concrete structure of 186 square meters, unheated since 2012, in which the remaining operational equipment continues its automated survey.

The coastline below the installation is characterized by dark volcanic sand beaches interrupted by irregular basalt formations. Tidal range at this location averages 2.3 meters. During equinoctial storms, wave action reaches the base of the promontory at a height of approximately 12 meters above mean sea level. The sound of the sea is a constant presence within the terminal building, audible through the ventilation system even when external microphones are disconnected.
