De Pretio — On Price
Price is the visible shadow that value casts upon the marketplace. It is value rendered into the common tongue of number, transacted across counters of wood and brass, scribbled in ledger books, whispered between strangers. To set a price is to attempt translation: from the inward conviction of worth, into the public instrument of exchange. The translation is always imperfect. Always.
The schoolmen of the thirteenth century debated pretium iustum — the just price — as a moral question. Was a price merely what the market would bear, or did goods possess an intrinsic worth that the merchant betrayed if he charged above it? Aquinas, in the Summa, argued for the latter: a deception of price was a sin against charity. The medieval economy, however small and frictioned by ours, was a moral architecture before it was a financial one.
In modern marketplaces, the price-tag has assumed a quiet authority that few interrogate. It appears as fact, but it is always proposition — a small wager that the seller has read the buyer's interior correctly. When the wager fails, prices fall. When it succeeds, they rise. The whole cathedral of contemporary commerce rests upon this oscillation of guesses.
III.
Marginal Utility
Utility, the schoolmen of Vienna and Lausanne came to understand, does not flow in even measure. The first cup of water, drawn from the desert spring, is incomparable. The second is welcome. The tenth is a small thing. The hundredth is a burden. The principle was named diminishing marginal utility, and with it the long puzzle of the diamond and the water — why a useless gem outprices a vital fluid — dissolved like sugar in tea.
What we will pay for a thing depends not on its essence but on the particular margin at which we encounter it. The hungry man and the sated man inhabit different economies though they sit at the same table. Carl Menger, in 1871, traced this insight with a clarity that still illuminates: value is always value-at-the-margin, never value-in-total.
This is the doctrine that quietly governs the supermarket aisle, the auction room, and the small daily decisions by which we consume our hours. Each new unit must justify itself against a fading horizon of want.
IV.
The Labour Theory
Smith, in his Wealth of Nations, observed that the real price of every thing is the toil and trouble of acquiring it. The labour theory of value, developed by Ricardo and brought to its formidable culmination in Marx's Capital, holds that the worth of a commodity is the socially necessary labour-time congealed within it. A coat that demands twenty hours of weaving is worth, in the long average, twice a shirt that demands ten.
This theory has been criticized, refined, partly abandoned, partly resurrected. Its appeal endures because it answers a moral hunger that the marginalist tradition cannot satisfy: it locates value in human effort, in the bent back and the calloused hand, in the dignity of making. Even those who reject its mechanics often find themselves smuggling it back in through the side door of policy and conscience.
In Korean, nodong (労動) means labour, and the character 動 depicts effort applied to the earth. The etymology remembers what the equation forgets: that all value, in the end, is paid for in time and breath.
V.
Scarcity & Plenitude
Scarcity is the silent architect of price. A thing abundant is rarely a thing valued; the air we breathe, the rain that falls, the smile of a familiar face — these escape the ledger entirely until their loss writes them in. Lionel Robbins defined economics itself as the science of scarcity, the study of human conduct in the face of insufficient means.
Yet plenitude has its own price. The mind cannot weigh infinite options; it tires. A library of ten thousand volumes intimidates where a shelf of ten invites. The paradox of choice, traced by Schwartz and others, is the modern obverse of the ancient question: when scarcity yields to abundance, the bottleneck migrates from the world to the self.
The Daoist sages anticipated this. Zhi zu (知足) — to know enough — was, for them, the highest form of wealth. To want little is to be rich already; to want much is to be poor amid plenty.
VI.
The Exchange Relation
Exchange is the moment at which two private valuations meet in public, agree, and depart altered. The seller departs with currency; the buyer with goods. But each, in the deeper sense, departs with the other's surplus — the small overflow of subjective value that made the trade attractive at all. This was the insight of the Austrian school: every voluntary exchange creates wealth on both sides, for if it did not, neither party would consent.
The handshake, the nod, the signed contract — these are the visible rituals of an invisible negotiation. Marcel Mauss, in The Gift, traced the archaic forms of exchange: the kula ring, the potlatch, the ceremonial circulation of bracelets and necklaces among Pacific islands. He found that pure self-interest is a modern fiction; even in our most commercial transactions, an older logic of obligation, honour, and reciprocity quietly persists.
To understand price, then, is to study not merely the meeting of supply and demand, but the meeting of two interior worlds at the threshold of the marketplace, each carrying its own history, hunger, and hope into the negotiation.
