Eastward
The harbor falls behind like a memory losing detail. I can still see the lighthouse at Yeongdo, its beam cutting the dawn mist in regular arcs. The crew is quiet — not with apprehension but with the reverent stillness of those who have chosen to leave solid ground. The compass settles on bearing 090, due east into the rising sun.
우리는 항구를 떠났다. 수평선만이 우리를 맞이한다.
Open water. No land in any direction. The swell has found its rhythm — long, rolling waves from the southwest that lift us gently and pass beneath. I mark our position by the stars and the compass bearing. The old charts end here. From this point, we draw our own.
바다는 끝이 없다. 우리는 지도 밖으로 나아간다.
The current shifted today. We are carried northeast by an invisible river within the sea — the Kuroshio, warm and swift. I updated the chart with our corrected bearing. Strange shapes in the water at dusk: could be dolphins, could be something older.
해류가 우리를 이끈다. 깊은 바다의 길을 따라.
Twelve days out. The water has changed color — from grey-green to a deep, luminous blue that seems lit from below. We crossed over the continental shelf three days ago. Below us now: two thousand meters of nothing but dark water and whatever lives in it.
깊은 곳에서 무언가가 올라온다. 두려움이 아니라 경외심이다.
The barometer dropped thirty millibars in four hours. The sky turned the color of bruised iron. Then the wind hit.
Waves like mountains. The compass spins. I cannot fix our bearing. The charts are soaked. The ink runs.
폭풍이 삼킨다. 우리는 견딘다.
Calm. The storm broke before dawn and left us in water so still it mirrors the sky perfectly. I thought we had sailed off the edge of the map. Then the lookout called from the mast: land. A dark shape rising from the sea to the southeast, crowned with green, edged with white sand.
섬이다. 우리가 찾던 곳. 지도에 없는 땅.
We have arrived at a place that exists on no chart. I am drawing it now — every cove, every reef, every tree on the ridge. This island will have a name. This voyage will have an end. But the sea beyond the island stretches on, and I know already: we will sail again.
항해는 끝났다. 그러나 바다는 계속된다.
