WHAT ARE MORES

Mores are the essential norms that shape the moral fabric of a society -- unwritten rules so deeply embedded that violating them provokes not just disapproval but visceral revulsion. They are not laws, though laws often codify them after the fact. They are not etiquette, though manners often echo their structure. Mores are the invisible architecture of collective behavior, the gravitational field that holds communities in orbit around shared assumptions about right and wrong, clean and unclean, sacred and profane. They exist before language can name them and persist long after rational argument has dismantled their foundations.

The word itself comes from Latin -- the plural of mos, meaning custom or habit. In sociological usage, William Graham Sumner distinguished mores from folkways in his 1906 work: folkways are the casual conventions of daily life (which fork to use, how to greet a stranger), while mores carry the full weight of moral significance. To violate a folkway is to be awkward. To violate a more is to be dangerous. The distinction is not academic -- it is the difference between a raised eyebrow and a raised fist, between social correction and social exile.

Every society maintains its mores through a combination of internalized guilt and externalized punishment. The child who learns not to steal does not learn a law -- they learn a more, a sense that stealing is fundamentally wrong, that it violates something deeper than a statute. Consider the mores surrounding debt: in ancient Athens, a debtor could be enslaved. In medieval Europe, charging interest was a mortal sin. In contemporary capitalism, debt is the engine of economic growth and creditworthiness is a moral virtue. The behavior has not changed -- borrowing and lending -- but the moral weight assigned to it has inverted completely, more than once.

This oscillation is not random. Mores shift when the material conditions of a society change faster than its moral frameworks can adapt. Industrialization, urbanization, digital connectivity -- each technological rupture creates a gap between how people live and how they believe they should live. Into that gap rush new norms, often wearing the disguise of eternal truths. The mores of the digital age -- privacy as a right, connectivity as a need, attention as a currency -- feel as ancient and natural to a twenty-year-old as the mores of agricultural piety felt to a medieval peasant. Neither generation can see the contingency of its own convictions.

The mechanism of shift is always the same: a small group begins violating the existing more, absorbing the social punishment. If the violation provides a material or reproductive advantage, it spreads. If the violation reaches a critical mass, the more inverts -- what was deviant becomes normative, and the original norm becomes the new deviation. This is not progress. This is not regression. This is oscillation. The wave does not have a direction. It only has amplitude and frequency.

ENTROPY OF BELIEF

Every moral system contains the seeds of its own dissolution. The more rigid the norm, the more brittle it becomes under pressure. The more universally held, the more catastrophic its collapse. This is the paradox of mores: their strength is their weakness. A society that holds a particular behavior as absolutely sacred has no mechanism for gracefully revising that belief when circumstances demand it. The revision, when it comes, arrives not as gentle reform but as violent rupture -- revolutions, moral panics, generational warfare, the burning of what was once worshipped.

We are living through such a rupture now. The digital revolution has not merely changed our folkways -- how we shop, how we date, how we entertain ourselves -- it has destabilized our mores. The moral categories that organized industrial society -- the distinction between public and private, between work and leisure, between real and artificial, between human and machine -- are dissolving under the pressure of technologies that refuse to respect these boundaries.
