// chamber.one
THE
WHISPER
BEGINS
ENTRY 0001
You arrive at the threshold without remembering the road. The door is iron. The handle is bone. The hinges have not turned in a thousand years, yet the wood is warm.
Above the lintel: a single mark, scratched in haste — a question without its asker. The corridor beyond the door does not echo. The corridor beyond the door does not breathe.
FIRST RULE
Walk only forward. Do not name what answers when you call. Do not count the doors you pass. The quest is what you forget.
// chamber.two
THE
LEDGER
OF NAMES
ENTRY 0017
A book lies open on a stone slab. The pages are blank, but the ink remembers each visitor by the weight of their footsteps. Yours is already there, three lines down from the bottom.
EXCERPT
> name = unknown
> entered = 03:14 (local)
> exited = —
> status = WALKING
SECOND RULE
Sign nothing. Read everything. The ledger is not a record of arrivals; it is a list of those who could not leave.
// chamber.three
THE
CIPHER
WALL
INSCRIPTION
Eight rows of glyphs are scored across the wall. Each glyph is a question mark turned on its side, on its head, broken at the curl, missing its dot. The order is not the order you would read it in.
THIRD RULE
The wall does not need translating. Some answers are correct only when nobody understands them.
// chamber.four
THE
WELL OF
UNANSWERS
ENTRY 0042
At the floor of the chamber: a circular opening, ringed with iron. No water rises from it. No wind exits it. Drop a question into the well and it does not return — instead, every other question you have ever asked grows quieter for a moment.
DROPPED INTO THE WELL
- — who built the door
- — what year is it
- — is there a way back
- — am i alone
- — were they real
FOURTH RULE
You do not need every answer. You need the right number of them, which is fewer than you think.
// chamber.five
THE
HOLLOW
ROOM
ENTRY 0061
This room is the shape of the room before it, and the room before it was the shape of the room before that. The walls are not concrete. The walls are the absence of concrete, held in place by belief.
DIAGNOSTIC
> structural integrity: NOMINAL
> visible mass : 0kg
> load bearing wall : memory
> recommended action : believe harder
FIFTH RULE
Do not test the walls. They will fail every test. They are not failing — you are testing them wrong.
// chamber.six
THE
TURNING
POINT
ENTRY 0091
The corridor here doubles back on itself. You realize, with a flatness that is almost relief, that you have been walking the same passage for some time, and that each chamber is the same chamber dressed in different shadows.
SIXTH RULE
The dungeon does not end. The dungeon admits you. The difference is small, but it is the only difference that matters now.
YOU HAVE
ARRIVED
...or have you?
