On October 17, 1972, the skies over the Republic of Korea grew heavy. The Yushin Constitution was proclaimed and martial law descended, silence flowing through the streets. Yet within that silence, seeds of resistance were already growing. Citizens shared courage in whispers, keeping alive the embers of hope even in the darkest hours.
1980년 5월 광주. 계엄군의 진압에 맞서 시민들이 일어났다. 광주민주화운동은 한국 민주주의의 전환점이 되었다. 학생과 노동자, 평범한 시민들이 하나가 되어 불의에 맞섰다. 그들의 희생은 민주주의라는 꽃을 피우기 위한 씨앗이 되었다.
May 1980, Gwangju. Citizens rose against the martial law troops' suppression. The Gwangju Democratization Movement became a turning point for Korean democracy. Students, workers, and ordinary citizens united against injustice. Their sacrifice became the seeds that would bloom into the flower of democracy.
2024년 12월 3일, 윤석열 대통령이 비상계엄을 선포했다. 그러나 시민들과 국회의원들이 신속히 대응하여 계엄은 불과 몇 시간 만에 해제되었다. 이 사건은 대한민국 민주주의의 힘을 다시 한번 증명했다. 과거의 교훈이 현재를 지켰다.
On December 3, 2024, President Yoon Suk-yeol declared emergency martial law. Yet citizens and lawmakers responded swiftly, and the martial law was lifted within mere hours. This event once again proved the strength of Korean democracy. The lessons of the past protected the present.
계엄의 역사는 곧 저항의 역사이며, 저항의 역사는 곧 희망의 역사이다. 어둠이 짙을수록 빛은 더욱 찬란히 빛난다. 대한민국의 민주주의는 수많은 시민들의 용기와 희생 위에 세워졌다. 그 정신은 오늘도, 내일도 계속될 것이다.
The history of martial law is the history of resistance, and the history of resistance is the history of hope. The deeper the darkness, the more brilliantly the light shines. Korea's democracy was built upon the courage and sacrifice of countless citizens. That spirit continues today and will endure tomorrow.
