Photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide enters the leaf through stomata -- microscopic pores that open at dawn and close at dusk. Each molecule is captured by rubisco, the most abundant protein on Earth, and split apart. The carbon is kept. The oxygen is released. The atmosphere breathes out what the plant breathes in.
Photons strike chlorophyll and excite electrons into quantum coherence states that persist for femtoseconds -- long enough for the energy to find the most efficient path through the reaction center. Nature solved quantum computing four billion years ago.
Six molecules of CO2 combine with six molecules of water to produce one molecule of glucose and six molecules of oxygen. The Calvin cycle turns atmospheric waste into the sugar that powers every food chain on Earth.
Biomass Accumulation
A single mature oak tree contains approximately 1.5 tonnes of carbon. Across all forests, wetlands, grasslands, and ocean phytoplankton, the biosphere holds 550 gigatonnes of carbon -- more than twice the atmospheric reservoir. Life is the planet's largest carbon bank.
Mycelial networks extend beneath every forest floor, threading through soil particles with hyphal filaments thinner than human hair. These fungal highways transport carbon between trees -- from those with surplus to those in need. The forest is not a collection of individuals. It is a single carbon-sharing organism.
Decomposition
Every organism that fixes carbon will eventually release it. Fungi, bacteria, and archaea break organic matter back into CO2 and methane. The forest floor is not dead -- it is the busiest carbon exchange on Earth. A single gram of forest soil contains more microorganisms than there are humans alive.
The elegance of decomposition is that nothing is wasted. Carbon atoms released from a falling leaf will be absorbed by roots within days, incorporated into new tissue within weeks, and returned to the atmosphere within years. The cycle has no beginning and no end.
The cycle continues. Carbon remembers.
