field notes from the edge of inference
The first organism defies easy classification. Its fronds extend in fractal patterns that suggest self-awareness -- or at least, self-reference. Each branch contains a smaller copy of the whole. The recursion is not infinite; it terminates after seven iterations, as if the specimen knows when to stop thinking.
NOTE: growth patterns correlate with local gravitational flux. Revise hypothesis. This one communicates through color -- or, more precisely, through the absence of color. When stressed, it bleaches to perfect white. When at rest, it pulses in a cyan so deep it borders on ultraviolet. I have begun to suspect it is aware of being observed. The bleaching events coincide exactly with my approach vectors.
Three organisms growing from a single root system, yet each expressing a distinct morphology. The largest produces the nutrients; the middle filters toxins; the smallest -- barely visible -- appears to do nothing at all. And yet, when the smallest is separated from the cluster, the other two perish within hours. I have named it the reasoner.
CORRECTION: "does nothing" was premature. It calculates.
